1. Regulatory Oversight by TDLR
In the State of Texas, the electrical industry is governed by Title 8, Regulation of Environmental and Industrial Trades, Chapter 1305 of the Texas Occupations Code, administered by the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation (TDLR). All electrical contracting businesses and individual technicians must carry active state licensing.
2. The Path from Apprentice to Journeyman
Starting requires an Apprentice License ($20 registration fee). To sit for the Texas Journeyman Electrician exam, you must log at least 8,000 hours (approx. 4 years) of on-the-job training under the direct supervision of a licensed Master Electrician. Verification forms must be signed and stamped by your supervising master.
3. Master Electrician & Electrical Contractor Business Setup
Achieving Master Electrician status demands an additional 4,000 hours (minimum 12,000 total hours) and holding a Journeyman license for at least two years. To operate as an Electrical Contractor and bid jobs publicly, you must employ a designated Master Electrician and carry continuous general liability insurance of at least $300,000 per occurrence.
4. Renewal & Continuing Education (CE)
Texas electrical licenses renew annually with a $65 to $110 fee. Every licensee must complete 4 hours of TDLR-approved Continuing Education (CE) each year, covering the updated National Electrical Code (NEC), Texas laws, and OSHA workplace safety protocols.
