How to Get a California Contractor's License: 2026 CSLB Step-by-Step Guide

1. The $500 Statutory Threshold in California
Under California Business and Professions Code Section 7028, any construction, alteration, or repair project where the total cost of labor and materials exceeds $500 strictly requires a state contractor's license issued by the Contractors State License Board (CSLB). Attempting to circumvent this rule by breaking projects into $499 increments is illegal and treated as unlicensed contracting.
2. Qualifying Experience Requirements
To qualify for the examination, the applicant (or a designated Qualifying Individual) must demonstrate at least 4 full years (48 months) of journey-level, foreman, supervisor, or contractor experience within the 10 years preceding the application. This experience must be certified under penalty of perjury by a licensed contractor, employer, union representative, or architect.
3. The Application & Examination Process
The initial filing fee with CSLB is $450. Once approved, you will be scheduled for two computer-based examinations administered by PSI: the Law and Business Examination (115 multiple-choice questions) and your specific trade examination (115 questions). Both exams are closed-book, with a required passing score typically ranging between 68% and 72%.
4. Post-Exam Issuance: The $25,000 Contractor's Bond
After passing your examinations, CSLB requires proof of a $25,000 Contractor's Surety Bond (Bond of Qualifying Individual may also be needed if qualifying through an RME or RMO). In addition, you must submit proof of Workers' Compensation insurance (or an exemption certification if you have no employees) and the initial licensing issuance fee of $200 for sole proprietorships or $350 for corporations.
